What is urban design?

Urban Design is:

The attempt to give form, in terms of both beauty and function, to entire areas or to whole cities. The focus is on the massing and organization of buildings and on the spaces between them, rather than on the design of individual structures.

Urban Design is not Urban Planning...

Urban Planning and Urban Design are closely related disciplines. Both Urban Design and Urban Planning are concerned with understanding the physical, economic and social aspects of the city. Urban Planners develop plans, recommendations and regulations for maintaining and developing a city in the interest of public health, safety and welfare. Urban Designers take the process one step further by developing generic plans, recommendations and regulations into specific design solutions for streets, districts, neighborhoods and public places.

Although urban design is not found as a subject in its own right in many encyclopedias, you can get a good historical overview of its related discipline, urban planning, by reading the following short overview of the subject.
